"GENESIS FOLLOWED UP WITH A DUO LOOK THAT HIP HOP RARELY SEES THESE DAYS." - SWAY (SXSW TAKEOVER 2016
Genesis 651 is a hip-hop duo from Illinois (currently residing in Minnesota) that creates music that will take you on a journey through the struggle while simultaneously helping you overcome it.
Upon the release of their self-titled debut EP, “Genesis,”the guys have been keeping up the momentum, winning the "Next To Blow" award from The 4th Annual Twin Cities Urban Music Awards, placing 3rd at the Coast 2 Coast event in Austin Texas during SXSW, plus performing at the 150th Minneapolis Juneteenth Festival in Minnesota as well as different venues throughout the south.
Currently, the duo is recording their upcoming project titled "The Come Up" which paints a vivid picture on recent struggles on their journey to success. From discovering the not-so-pretty side of the music industry, to battling emotional demons due to the lost of several family members seemingly back to back one of whom was murdered in Chicago during the making of this project, to dealing with a separation while still supporting a child, "The Come Up" is sure to take you on an emotional roller coaster.
"The concept is motivation for those who listen but also an in depth look into our personal lives while we explain our journey the last few years and the greatness to come. This is Rocky running up those stairs right before the big fight. This is the end of procrastination and hesitation, This Is The Come Up."
Both hailing from Illinios, Lashon Marshall Hampton (Lyrical Calage) being from Chicago and Darnell Overton (TwistBeTheName), born in Rock Island, the guys were both introduced to music at a very young age. They would have never imagined that a high school Theater class friendship would transform into making music, as they naturally discovered they both had a talent for rapping. One day their friends suggested they should become a duo and after recording a few songs together they realized the vibe was there and Genesis was born.
